about

I no longer have to stress that I am an old Dude whose past is growing suspiciously as if it were a tumor. There aren't many reasons to be dissatisfied with my age, either. Most of the drawbacks were on my radar. But there is one aspect that did catch me a bit cold: There's obviously a view of life deep inside me that now turns out to be youthful delusions of feasibility: I always thought that everything was possible, that I could learn anything, that I could do and become anything. And I've always lived that way, too. I was a philosophy lecturer, a tango teacher, a graphic designer, a café manager, a marketing director, a primary school teacher, a coach and an author. And suddenly I notice how the options are getting fewer. Not even out in the world, but in my head. The paint is off, the options no longer sparkle. I'm less and less interested. The attraction of the new is wearing off. Maybe that's why it throws me back to music - because in the end, it's the only thing I've really always done. That the song relates this pattern to love affairs and young seductions is just a stylistic coincidence. I don't miss lovers. I'm missing the feeling that anything is possible.

lyrics

GIMME MY POSSIBLE WORLDS BACK

We meet late, but it’s still summer outside
She talks for hours, tries to fill an empty night
I might as well sleep with her, on that table right here
but those possible worlds tend to flicker and then they disappear
I die slowly, toppling over like a dead old tree
it's in slow motion so no one can see
I see countless options of the younger men
and these beautiful beings at their other end

We meet late, but it's still summer outside
She talks for hours trying to fill the night
I might as well sleep with her, right here
but these possible worlds tend to flicker and disappear
She whispers dirty in my ear and I think
Where were you 20 years ago
She was barely in school back then
That's where the daydream ends

And I wonder how these paths in one’s life
can be so random and yet right.

I see countless options of the younger men
and these beautiful beings at their other end
The Rock’n’Roll is reduced to one beer
and the refusal of being a prudent man
I tried to keep track of the worlds I could have entered
but I’ve lost most of them
Where are you now, my Ada, my Ava, my Sweet Jane, and my Suzanne

And I wonder how these paths in one’s life
can be so random and yet right.

Gimme my possible worlds back
I wanna use them again
Gimme my possible worlds back
I wanna use them again
Gimme my possible worlds back
I wanna use them again
Gimme my possible worlds back
I wanna use them again
