about
The genesis for this song is quite romantic. It was 1998, I was in my early 20s, living in Berlin and was in love with a woman from my shared flat. In fact, she reciprocated my enthusiasm to some extent, and when friends asked her if she fancied a few days on the Baltic Sea, she just took me along. I wrote this weird song for her - Chameleon Eyes is probably not a direct compliment from a purely visual point of view, and ultimately it's just about my mistrust. But I organised an acoustic guitar, even pretended to be a campfire guitarist, and so I was able to surprise her with the song. It doesn't get much more romantic than that in my universe. The relationship even lasted a few weeks, later she was with my best friend - ah, the good old days. But the song stayed.
I always liked its melody, even if the lyrics, of course, faded quickly. I tried for years to write smarter lyrics, arranged probably twenty different versions of the song, got more and more lost in new ideas, discarded them again - until I finally realised a year or two ago that I had to return to the original version. You can still hear a little of the complexity that has developed in the meantime - for example, there is a very delicate transition from the verse theme to the chorus theme (shortly after the third verse) that I sat on for quite a while. And the 30 or 40 tracks of the present recording also speak for themselves. In the end, the lyrics have only been slightly reworked, and the mixture of self-irony and helpless infatuation still corresponds to the original. After 25 years, it's also no longer about a perfect version of the song - it's just about finally getting rid of the thing.
